    • Well most planes are designed to glide when un powered so maby what the headline was trying to get across was it just sucked at gliding
      14 2
    • That sounds like an issue my gun is having. When the mag is empty, I can no longer shoot
      14 5
    • That's an odd fucking coincidence, my car slows down when the same thing happens
      13
    • They’re supposed to be able to glide efficiently. A plane without fuel doesn’t just drop like a dead bird in the sky.
      10 2
    • It's saying that it doesn't glide as well as it should. They should work on wording.

    • I believe they're actually talking about the ability of the plane to glide for a short time to allow for a safer and more controlled emergency landing rather than just plummeting straight down.
      10 2
    • Planes can glide for miles with no engine once in the air. But this mofo is big, bulky, and heavy
      9 5
    • Just so yall know, im 90% sure theyre saying that it cant glide down like other planes, meaning once the fuel is gone its pretty much fucked

    • for y’all saying it’s common sense, planes are supposed to be able to glide and run without fuel to prevent many things. it should be able to function somewhat normally without fuel in the tank. fuel is mainly used for gaining elevation and speed not every single function in the world
      9 3
    • They are saying it won't glide very well you fucking pea brain mongoloids
      8 3
    • All of you are retarded, this is a safety issue because planes should be able to glide for long distance with zero power to the engine incase of engine failure etc. "StUpId LiBeRaL MeDiA"
      10 10
    • You may laugh, but most planes can glide when they run out of fuel. I think what they are saying is the 777 has problems gliding, which is a HUGE flaw.
      8
    • Planes are supposed to have a good glide ratio. It's a safety feature. The 777 is shit at it. Y'all bad at research.
      8 1
    • They're saying that it's not a good glider. Every dumbass here thinks "hurr hurr of course it's not gonna fly cause it's out of fuel durrr."
      8
    • Since none of you seem to know how a Airplane should work I’ll explain..... airplanes are designed to be able to Glide and still make a safe landing if they ever run out of fuel and the 777 couldn’t glide down slow enough to make a safe landing. Thank you.
      9 2
    • It could be a bad way of saying that if the tanks run dry the plane doesn't have good natural lift so with a lack of thrust it could lose altitude faster than a plane with better natural lift
      8 2
    • Generally an aircraft can slowly lose altitude after fuel is depleted
      abi_bb 18d
      7
    • Sound like they’re unable to establish a proper glide slope, due to weight displacement and ensuing lack of elevator/stabilator authority
      Stiehl 18d
      9 11
    • It could be suggesting that other planes are more capable of gliding should issues occur, maybe the 777 just falls like a brick or has alot less aerodynamics/maneuverability.
      8 6
    • Meaning the dont glide the best guys, due to weight and the way the wings are
      7
    • What they are talking about is unlinke most aircraft(especially light aircraft like civilian cesnas) can glide for quite a few miles and even land safely without fuel and even on most commercial airlines the plane can fly with only one engine
      7 2
    • This just in. Cars struggle to drive when out of fuel. Coming up next, surprising news about boats.
      SPUTS 19d
      7
    • This is actually a concern, planes are supposed to be able to glide without fuel to land safely you fucking retards
      8
    • Thing about it is planes are supposed to glide when they have no fuel, so the 777 probably doesn’t glide for nearly as long as other planes
      7 1
    • This is referring to the crafts ability to glide without propulsion which is a key factor in an emergency landing
      7 5
    • Anyone remember the news headline "china may be using the sea to hide their submarines"
      7
    • I'm sure this is just something about their gliding systems, no one can be that stupid
      6
    • BREAKING NEWS! My phone is at 1% and I don’t know what happens when it hits 0%. I hope CNN tells me wha—
      6
    • It’s because aircraft are designed to stay in flight at certain altitudes for certain lengths of time under various conditions to ensure safety. Like “plane __ should be able to glide for ____ minutes safely on one engine” or in this case, no fuel.
      6 1
    • A plane needs to be able to glide a certain distance to find a suitable landing area in the event of a fuel tank rupture or something similar. The 777 may do poorly gliding without propulsion. People will say anything to make the media look bad.
      6 2
    • Everyones shitting on them but they dont realize that other planes glide better, these guys will just drop outa the sky. Jesus people
      6 2
    • As someone who works in Aviation myself, it’s always hilarious watching the media freak out about the tiniest Aviation things. They seriously don’t understand anything about planes and they make that blatantly obvious
      6 3
    • They mean that it falls like a brick- it is supposed to be able to hold altitude for a little and glide
      5
    • Most planes can glide a large distance once the engines shut off. The 777 doesn't glide very long and can be seen as a safety issue. This isn't crackpot news, you just don't understand it
      5 3
    • I'll give OP some credit, CNN could have gone with a better title, but OP doesn't understand the actual point of what the title was referring to, which is the glide capability of the plane, or its mass distribution
      Zazecki 18d
      6 1
    • the point is that without gas in an emergency situation it’s gliding capabilities are not very good
      6 2
    • I wonder if it's trying to say that 777s have a bad glide ratio
      5 1
    • I have also come to the conclusion that if my fuel tank on my car is empty my car struggles to drive, what kind of piece of shit car are companys making
      5
    • This is an actual problem. Normally the plane would glide, but the jet engines are angled slightly and the plane loses altitude faster than normal without the jets firing.
      6 3
    • Planes should be able to glide and keep altitude for a while after losing gas
      5 2
    • I think what they mean is it doesn’t glide as well. Most aircraft can work without fuel (granted its way more dangerous) if it comes to last resort, like the gimli glider incident
      5
    • I think they're talking about an inability to glide efficientlh
      5
    • Wow they really have run out of things to report 😂. News: cars don’t move unless you put in the the devils blood known as oil
      5
    • Anyone who knows literally anything about planes knows this is talking about gliding
      5 1
    • It means it can’t glide very well, headasses. It ain’t hard to deduce
      5 70
    • What they mean is that it requires perpetual thrust, while many planes can enter a glide aftwr cutting throttle
      5
    • Probably referring to its optimal glide ratio but w/e
      5
    • Okay, a plane can maintain altitude even when the tanks are dry because of their speed, that means most of the planes can glide when their tanks are empty. This headline is calling out the fact that the Boing 777 is too heavy to keep gliding without losing too much altitude
      4 2
    • As an aerospace engineer it’s OP who doesn’t understand the issue they’re talking about here. Fuel/engines don’t generate the lift that planes use to maintain altitude, that’s what the wings do. When a plane runs out of fuel, they are usually able to maintain altitude with little loss for a while.
      5 5
    • Wow, no shit right?
      4
    • Idiot, just call AirSide Assistance. Pull the 777 over to the side of the lane and wait for someone to bring you more gas
      4
    • My car struggles to move with no gas
      5
    • It's from CNN what else is there to expect
      4 2
    • Next up on CNN: "Cars stop when gas runs out"
      5
    • This news team also discovered a ship loses buoyancy with now bottom
      4
    • Oh, the media is terrible when it comes to aviation terms and knowledge. It makes me cringe all the time.
      5 5
    • I like how the top two comments have absolutely nothing to do with the post fucking genius I tell you....🙃
      4
    • Jet airliners are meant to be able to maintain a controlled descent if fuel is empty, whereas the 777 will plummet too rapidly.
      Merch 19d
      4
    • It just means that the 777 is not the best at gliding compared to other models
      4 3
    • and youll get dehydrated if you dont drink enough water
      4
    • Planes are supposed to be able to glide relatively well without using thrust.
      _Sora__ 17d
      3 6
    • A plane is supposed to be able to sorta glide like a bird. In this case the plane is probably too heavy for that to be possible(Boeing jets are know for being very large).
      4 4
    • It's not saying that it can't fly when it runs out of fuel, they're saying that compared to other planes, when the 777 runs out of fuel it can't glide nearly as well
      4
    • As an aviation geek this fucking hurts
      3
    • Yay an aviation meme
      3
    • As in, it wont be able to glide as long on empty as other passanger aircraft.
      3
    • I bet it'll also be the first 777 at the site of the crash as well.
      3
    • 777 is like a goddamn brick without thrust, terrible gliding capabilities
      3 2
    • That's how planes work... When they run out of fuel or all engines fail they'll glide to the ground
      3 2
    • All you silly goobers. What it's saying is that it drops severely faster than most planes. Not quit as much gliding. You're welcome.
      3
    • Shit, next you tell me ice is made out of fuckin' water
      Sargrus 19d
      3 2
    • I hate it when I car stops going when I run out of gas, somebody fix this
      mgm0fo1 19d
      3
    • Well that could mean it has a terrible ability to glide and will just drop like a rock rather than a paper airplane if that makes sense or I'm just stupid someone educate me
      3
    • I feel like context is missing that makes the headline not stupid
      4 12
    • Someone should tell them what happens to cars when they run out of gas
      3
    • It means the weight balance of the plane is compromised when the tanks are empty making an emergency landing harder. Holy fuck yall are stupid.
      3
    • The planes can’t glide if the tank is empty.
      3 1
    • When it’s talking about maintaining altitude it means gliding on empty honestly some people are dumb🙄
      3 8
    • Dude ikr, my volkswagen has the same problem, it wont even work when the tank is empty, stupid german design
      3 2
    • What they mean is most planes can glide at the altitude for an “okay” amount of time where as at 777 does it due to weight and design.
      3 1
    • Did yall know ur car wont run if u dont fill it with gas? Fuckin scam bro
      3
    • Sounds stupid... but I think they’re talking about the plane being unable to maintain a glide making emergency landings rather deadly
      3 5
    • They mean gliding to safety dumbasses
      4
    • CNN is a lot like The Onion these days
      ap540 19d
      3
    • By struggle they mean it'll be bad at gliding to safety in case the fuel goes empty, some commercial aircraft are great for gliding in such emergency, others not so much
      3
    • Would everyone like to know who created this news story? His name is Shit Sherlock, first name No.
      4
    • Airplanes are supposed to be able to glide without the engines. That’s just how you know they’re built right. Not that it can take off without it, but once it’s at altitude a good pilot could even gain some altitude with no throttle under the right conditions. In ww2 gliders were cheaper than planes
      3 3
    • Made by someone who doesnt understand that airplanes are engineered to be able to maintain altitude without power with a Controlled glide.
      Danival 19d
      3
    • Next you’ll say I was only pretending to be retarded
      3
    • Correct term is "falling with style" my good sir
      3
    • I think what they mean is it can’t glide when it loses thrust
      MLG2000 19d
      3
    • well i think they mean that it doesn’t glide effectively or efficiently. it could be the design or the weight of it that makes it drop
      4
    • Commercial planes are also gliders their supposed to stay at high altitudes for miles because the engines can run without fuel if in the air...
      3
    • In other news, your car will stop moving when it runs out of fuel too
      4
    • Of course a stupid story coming from CNN. I have to hand it to them though, it’s not fake news.
      4
    • I hope it means that it cant glide very well if for some reason the engines arent working which could be bad in emergency situations.
