On November 1957, a stray dog from Moscow named Laika became the first dog to ever be sent to space. She was sent on a one-way trip. She died from overheating after a few short hours. A monument now stands near the military research facility that prepared her flight.
A dog named Bamse was the heroic mascot of the
Norwegian armed forces in exile during WWII. He once saved the life of a young lieutenant commander by fighting off a knife-welding enemy.
Bamse would also break up fights among crew mates by putting his paws on their shoulder to calm them down. After his death, Bamse was buried with full military honors.
