The Chirurgeon's Apprentice 13 hrs The hearse which carried Abraham Lincoln's body through
Springfield, Illinois after his assassination by John Wilkes
Booth on April 15th, 1865. It featured a panel over the
middle window which showcased 36 stars (one for each
state of the Union) as well as a silver laurel wreath and two
inverted torches, representing the life extinguished. The
President's body arrived in Springfield (his home and his
place of burial) after travelling through 180 cities and 7
states by train.
Sadly, the hearse was destroyed in a fire in 1887. The Staab
Family Funeral Home in Springfield is in the process of
recreating the famous hearse.
