    • My mom wasn't rich by any means, when she passed she left I and my brother a fairly hefty inheritance. The biggest policies were a tsp fund and her MetLife insurance. The tsp was about $213k. The gov took roughly $50k out of it before me or my bro saw any of it, and we still had to pay taxes on it.

    • That's why it is important to make your inheritance a trust. That way, while the heirs get it in installments, it is not taxable by inheritance tax. Also, if you die with no heirs, all your property and such goes to the gov't, and they call this "escheat", which literally has "cheat" in the name!
