    • Firefighter here: Yes these vests have been around in SOME departments for years; we started getting them after Ferguson. NO they ARE NOT for shrapnel, that’s total BS it’s wildly impractical to wear under turnouts. We use them when safety is a concern, and sadly we do sometimes get shot at.

    • Fire fighters do more than respond to fires. Every call they’re out on the streets and in unsafe neighborhoods. At least in atl they’re often quicker to the scene to administer basic interventions like O2 or even start an IV (sometimes)

It's those incidents that have now caused the fire department to ENCOURAGE EMT's and first responders to carry at least a handgun on them.
