    • I made one of these for engineering and visually I was able to understand the functions, it was easy to tell that the purpose of the layer of rocks was to break down the dirt in water, charcoal and sand to filter out chemicals and clarity and cloth to pick up any smaller pieces of anything

    • Ok, water plant operator here. This is how a gravity filter work, but all the filter media is backwards. You need the largest media on the bottom and the smallest on the top. As the water moves through the media suspended matter is adsorbed (not absorbed) to the media filtering the water. Cont.

    • This picture is incorrect. You're supposed to start with the biggest stuff (rocks and charcoal) then work your way down to the finer stuff (sand, etc.). The process of going through the gradually smaller stuff strains out the bad stuff in the water.
