• A Syrian boy was born with a genetic
condition that made his skin extremely
fragile. For his whole life, most of his body
looked like an open wound-and he wasn't
expected to live for long. Doctors in
Germany took a sample of his skin and
infected it with a customized virus to repair
the DNA, then used those modified skin cells
to grow skin grafts totaling 9 square feet.
The boy now leads a normal life.

    • This sounds like a break through we need but it's similar to crispr. We didn't make crispr we just found it in nature and modified it. It's still very "unstable". Look up crispr if you're interested in DNA modification possibilities.

    • The boy's name is Hassan. The genetic disease is "junctional epidermolysis bullosa." It affects 1/20,000 people and has a 40% mortality rate. The treatment was free as it was an experimental treatment that had only treated one other person effectively, a 49 year old woman with a small EB wound.
