Vote 30 Share Award Nm i" ,v"\;7i:liigi<:t ; - NOW Lmao. Well, firstly I'd say it's perfectly acceptable to laugh at them - their failure to understand methods. and the infinite degrees of separation between the ontological status of, say, Santa Claus, or fairies, or unicorns, and God, is ridiculous. A great response to this, however. would be to expound upon precisely what a method is. Tell them it's a priorly delineated field of study which constrains itself to focus on a specific topic. In the instance of Santa Claus, or unicorns, the methodology employed would be any naturalistic science, which forcibly removes an attribute of being, and constrains itself to studying whatever aspect of being it so chooses. Physics, for example, could be said to study the local movement of being. Biology could be said to be the study of organic, living beings. Anatomy is the study of the human being. Etcetera. Now. upon turning our attention to being itself. and more specifically, the existence of being, we find that the most universal, or fundamental of effects, being, presupposes the most universal, or fundamental of causes, God. How else could you study the supreme cause, unknowable to the empirical sciences, if not through its effect? This tells us precisely the methodology we must employ to study the existence of God - metaphysics - the study of being qua being. Now metaphysics, much like the other delineated fields mentioned, purposely constrains itself to the study of being qua being, so it, much like the others, doesn't merely refuse to comment upon whether or not Santa exists - it literally can’t. So here we find the first issue - Another one.
