They were digging trenches, and setting fortifications on the hillside overlooking the
forest below. Time was not on their side, and the sun was already drifting below the
skyline. If they were lucky, they'd live to see the dawn of tomorrow. unfortunately that
wasn't on any of the soldiers minds, because all they felt was fear.
Before they had realized it, the sun had left them and night had fallen. Each man had
quit digging, and settled into their firing position with their rifles. Now all that was left
was to wait, and hope that tonight wasn't their last.
There was no moon tonight, no birds, no bugs, and no animals calling out. The platoon
was spread out over the hillside, along the trench lines, and in MG nests. Every man
waited anxiously. The night dragged, as if to say there will be no tomorrow.
Without warning, the forest floor below and half a mile in front of them came to life.
Fireballs bloomed above the tree tops, rifle and machine gun fire came to life, and
screams filled the air. Not just the screams of men, but the screams of something
inhumane and ancient in this world. Every man watched and listened, feeling the blood
pumping through their veins and the fear swell in their hearts. They had not been told
what they were there to fight, but they had heard rumours from other platoons and
companies. There were never any survivors to tell the tale. The forest was still alive with
screaming, explosions, gunfire, and lights from red ominous flares. However the gunfire
was becoming less frequent, and the screaming had all but stopped. The forest was
quiet once again. The soldiers waited for any signs of life from the other platoon, but
there was nothing. instead they heard screaming coming up the hill towards them
